Google To Flag Non-SSL Websites as Not Secure - Why they matter for your website

Google has announced that starting July 1, 2018, all websites without an SSL installed will be flagged as "Not Secure".

What will this look like?

If your website does not have an SSL installed, your visitors will see a "Not Secure" warning at the top of their browser just like this:

How do I make sure this doesn't happen on my website?

You will need to have an SSL Certificate installed. Take a look at the top of our website and you'll see what an SSL secured website looks like. You should see a green padlock, similar to this:

What is an SSL Certificate?

An SSL (or Secure Sockets Layer) certificate is what adds the ā€˜Sā€™ to HTTPS in your browser's address bar. HTTPS indicates that the data sent between your website and your visitor's browser is fully encrypted and secure.

How much will this cost me?

MyWork charges $100/year (ex GST) for an SSL Certificate to be installed and activated on your website. An SSL is a feature of our Security Package, which offers our customers:

  • A fully encrypted and installed SSL Certificate
  • Daily, weekly and monthly automated backups
  • Remote backup for increased data integrity
  • Firewall protection
  • Daily automated security and virus scans

What will happen if I don't install an SSL Certificate on my website?

Your website will still fully function, but after July 1, 2018 when a visitor lands on your site they will see a "Not Secure" message at the top of their browser. This will likely impact your customer's confidence in continuing to use your website.

Why are you making me install an SSL?

Although MyWork certainly support this change as it will dramatically increase the overall security of the internet, this is not a change we are enforcing. Rather, this is something Google is introducing in their popular Google Chrome web browser. It is anticipated other popular browsers such as Firefox, Safari and Microsoft Edge will follow suit shortly after.
